The below demonstration sites were completed during a Certified Natural Shoreline Professional Training.  All but one of the sites is available for the public to visit as they were completed on lakes in partnership with County, Village or City parks.

Each site was planted with a variety of different Michigan native plants. The variety provided the root structure needed for shoreline stability.  Plants such as sedges, rushes and grasses should be included in any project along with the flowering plants.  None of the sites had a specific landscape plan meaning they were all planted randomly.  If a homeowner prefers a more organized landscape planting that can be done as well. See the MNSP Plant List for the different options to choose from.

The slide shows for each of the demonstration sites provide pictures of each site from before, during and after construction.   They also continue with photos for the following years after construction where we have been able to.  These slide shows are a work in progress still.

Technical Information:
Constructing Encapsulated Soil Lifts

Watch a video of hands-on training for Certified Natural Shoreline Professionals.  During this continuing educational training two kinds of encapsulated soil lifts are constructed on the Kellogg Biological Station Shoreline Management Demonstration Area (July 2011)

Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station Demonstration Areas:  www.shoreline.msu.edu

Beginning in 2001, four individual lakescapes were designed and installed along 400 feet of beautiful Gull Lake (Kalamazoo County) shoreline. They incorporate varying degrees of low maintenance, low input and native plant species, along with several soil bio-engineered erosion control structures.

A full color, self-guided brochure highlighting the features of each lakescape may be found here or you can download it below.
