Michigan State University's Kellogg Biological Station Demonstration Areas:
Beginning in 2001, four individual lakescapes were designed and installed along 400 feet of beautiful Gull Lake (Kalamazoo County) shoreline. These sites were part of the beginning of the MNSP!
A full color, self-guided brochure highlighting the features of each lakescape may be found here or you can download it.

Certified Natural Shoreline Professional Training Installation Sites
The below demonstration sites were completed during a Certified Natural Shoreline Professional Training. The slide shows for each of the demonstration sites provide pictures of each site from before, during and after construction. They also continue with photos for the following years after construction where we have been able to. These slide shows are a work in progress still.
- Each site was planted with a variety of different Michigan native plants. The variety provided the root structure needed for shoreline stability. Plants such as sedges, rushes and grasses should be included in any project along with the flowering plants.
- None of the sites had a specific landscape plan meaning they were all planted randomly. If a homeowner prefers a more organized landscape planting that can be done as well.
- There are a variety of different types of techniques among the sites. The designs are site specific.
- Maintenance of each of these sites has varied greatly.
